Mike's Monday Thought 6/23Text Grabbers (4) No one can read the New Testament and not be grabbed by 2 Thessalonians 2:3. Paul is attempting to remove their concerns about the false teaching that the "day of the Lord" had already come. Paul reminds them, "Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed." When I first heard this verse, back in the sixties, the teacher said it was clearly a prophecy about the coming Pope. Others said it was talking about one of the Caesars, but most said we would never know. If you check any good commentary, they will toss out some ideas, but will also conclude, in a scholarly way of course, we just don't know who Paul was talking about. While it's fun and challenging to speculate, we must be okay with simply saying that we don't know. So, what does that tell us? It reminds us that the epistles were personal letters. The Thessalonians knew who he was talking about because he had talked about this when he was with them. There are plenty of things in the epistles that were personal to the audience and we will never know the who, what, why, or how. What did Euodia and Syntyche disagree about? They knew! ... Mike's Monday Thought 6/16Text Grabbers (3) Jesus taught us to pray to God and ask for "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." There is no such thing as doing God's will and not pleasing God. We do his will when we do what he commands us to do. There is a very familiar passage that all of us enjoy but we might be ignoring the most important part of it. Paul wrote, "Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thess.5:16-18) This is an amazing trio of godly characteristics. Rejoice, pray, and give thanks. These are not just fluffy spiritual concepts! These are things that are the will of God! They are heart conditions not just neat topics to study. A joyful heart talks to God and gives thanks constantly. There is nothing about these three things that is negotiable. If it is his will, it is his commandment! ... See MoreSee Less

Mike's Monday Thought 6/9Text Grabbers (2) I have often joked that we are a society in search of a new superlative. We love our superlatives. Oops, I just used one. Love is one of our favorite superlatives because somewhere along the way, like just wasn't strong enough. The same is true with hate. I mention this because superlatives are so overused we tend to not pay much attention to them. Do we do that with the Bible too? A true grabber text for me is a verse I read for decades before it grabbed me and demanded that I not minimize it any longer. In 1 Peter 4:8 Peter said, "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins." Does "above all" really mean above all? Is there nothing we do as disciples or churches more important than loving each other deeply? What else do we do that can "cover a multitude of sins"? This text needs to grab more of us because it really is ABOVE ALL. ... See MoreSee Less

Mike's Monday Thought 6/2Text Grabbers I have been studying the Bible for over sixty years and the thing that amazes me the most is how it changes every time I read it. Of course, it is not the text that has changed, but my way of thinking has changed, and it causes me to see things anew, differently, and often in surprising ways. Some verses of scripture simply grab my heart and squeeze it causing me to think, "Wow! Is that really saying what I think it is saying. Here's an example. I have been in scores of elder/minister meetings where we discuss and debate the need for a new mission, vision, goal, objective, or some other catchy branding statement. I have never enjoyed those meetings. Paul declared to Timothy, "The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith." (1 Tim.1:5) Sounds to me like Paul was giving us the mission/vision/goal/objective that God wants us to have. Could it be that simple and straightforward? Why not? ... See MoreSee Less
