Hi! My Name Is Jesus! (3)      John 2:1-11          11-1-20

Bottom Line: Every Christian must move from knowing about Jesus to truly knowing Him.

Introduction:

 A. Have you ever met a real celebrity? Who? When?

 B. I met a Senator and former Governor of Arkansas.

 C. Knowing about someone is not really knowing them.

 D. Most people know about Jesus, but not as many truly know him and have a relationship with him. Knowing about him means:

   1. Being informed but without understanding

   2. Having knowledge without commitment

   3. Aware of a person without any passion

 E. Is Jesus a celebrity or a personal friend? Do you know him or just know about him?

 F. Just days after being baptized and recruiting most of his disciples, they were all invited to a wedding in Cana.

   1. Small town nine miles north of Nazareth, hills of Galilee – community gala for whole town

   2. Several days of feast, wine, & dancing – to run out of wine – a social disgrace not forgotten.

   3. A huge celebration party & they wanted Jesus there!

 G. John wants us to know something about Jesus…

1. Hi! My name is Jesus and I love a good celebration!

 A. Why is it hard to think of Jesus having fun & laughing?

 B. He & his disciples were invited! No one knew who he really was! No one invited a party-pooper!

 C. What happened at a Jewish wedding? Food, fun, & fellowship! Dancing & lots of wine! …for days!

 D. Would Jesus come to one of your celebrations?

2. Hi! My name is Jesus and I always honor my parents!

 A. He was the patriarch of his family but taking care of Mom was his #1 job. Even at the cross!

 B. When Mom talks, everybody listens! Respect!

 C. She was a fixer and Jesus said, “Not my problem”!

   1. He cared, he just wasn’t ready to do a miracle

   2. She ignored him – “Do what he tells you!”

 D. We are never too old to stop honoring our Moms!

3. Hi! My name is Jesus and I will change my plans because of love!

 A. “My time has not come” means he had a plan and a schedule

 B. Plans were made to be changed! Even for Jesus! For Mom and friends!

 C. Love always transcends preferences!

4. Hi! My name is Jesus and my work is always the best!

 A. Wine of all things? Why make it the best!

   * 120 gallons (180) = 2000 4 oz cups – diluted 3 to I water and it would last for days

 B. Jesus isn’t in the “just get by” business but God’s business! Represents God! Master of banquet = head waiter – impressed and complimentary

 C. Jesus was okay w/ the host getting the credit!

Conclusion:

A. Changed the minds of the disciples, vs.11 = faith!

B. From past celebrity to present friend, Lord, Savior

C. Do you know him or just know about him!

D. Seek – Serve – Sense – Share = know him!

1.  Who is a celebrity that you admired and respected until you found out they were not what you thought they were in real life?

2.  What is the biggest difference between knowing about somebody and really knowing them?

3.  If we only know about Jesus but don’t really know him, what does that say about our faith and our walk with God?

4.  What do you think the wedding in Cana looked like?

5.  Why is it difficult for some people to visualize Jesus laughing, dancing, drinking wine, and having fun?

6.  How would you describe Jesus’ relationship with his mother?

7.  What did Jesus mean by saying, “My time has not yet come”?

8.  Why did Jesus change his plans? Wasn’t it God’s plan too?

9.  Why is it important that the wine Jesus made was the best? Is it really that important?

10. Why didn’t Jesus or Mary step forward and give Jesus the credit for performing a miracle and saving the honor of the hosts?

11. Why do you think John wanted us to know about this event?
